On Saturday, 27 October, Birmingham Uni Korfball Club took part and won the annual Nottingham Beginners’ Korfball Tournament held this year at Wildcat’s Arena. The tournament is traditionally played in fancy dress and this year was no exception with a theme of ‘Stereotypes’. Birmingham dressed as “different Types of Stereos” with two teams entered. The two teams were split evenly with experienced players and freshers.

Birmingham 1 and 2 finished 1st and 9th, respectively, with Birmingham 2 drawing too many times in the group stages, lacking that finishing edge that Birmingham 1 seemed to have as they won every game they played.

Birmingham 1 topped their group in three games with Laura Pacey scoring 5 goals over the first stage. A buzzer beater from Andrew Bovey sealed the win in the final group game to see them through to the next stage (a three team pool). Birmingham 1 went on to win this pool with ease and were through to the quarter finals.

In the final game Birmingham were up against Leeds Uni who they had previously beaten in the group stage. Leeds put up a tougher fight in the final and despite Birmingham’s best effort it was a draw at full time and went to penalties.

Birmingham went first with Andrew Bovey starting the scoring with an effortless goal, Leeds followed to level 1 – 1. Laura Pacey and John Evans continued the good form with successful penalties followed be Leeds scoring theirs seeing it into a sudden death shoot out. The next two penalties dropped for both teams followed by some nervous misses.

By now a crowd had gathered as both teams were back to their first penalty takers, the pressure was high and Bovey stepped up to try and put Birmingham back on course with another goal. The ball hung at the top of the post before tilting through the korf and putting all the pressure on Leeds to remain in the game. Leeds faltered as the ball smacked into the front of the korf.

With the final won and spirits high, the awards for the day were given out, including Best Fancy Dress going to University of Birmingham too!

There were notable performances throughout the day especially Laura Pacey (9 – goals), Andrew Bovey (6). and some very important first time goals to new members Robert Wright (2) and Kirstie MacDougall (2), as well as some great support throughout the day by Nana Jev.
